Belated Happy New Year!
The Proud Chicken
This blog entry is dedicated to my uncle Rick Sander who died on January 5, 2010. The best description of him so far was written by his longtime friend Greg, “Few people are as fascinating, interesting, humorous and creative.”
The New Year is an opportunity for adjusting direction and setting new goals. This year I hope integrate my knowledge while moving forward with less worry. I noticed that I am at times motivated by fear rather than creativity and curiosity. I imagine this fear might be a common problem for photographers in recent years as the change in technology moves rapidly and creates fundamental changes in the way we do business.
The Proud Chicken photograph is a good reminder of my New Year’s goal. The chicken is normally a fearful bird with herd mentality, but this particular chicken had enough curiosity to suspend his natural instinct, check out the situation and face something that in reality was not scaring at all – me.
This image was taken for the cover of Maryland Life Magazine with the help of Publisher Dan Patrell who attempted to herd and charm chickens into being cover art. Thank you Dan.
Considering what his friend said, maybe the best way to honor our uncle is to be all of those things: fascinating, interesting, humorous, and creative. And you have most certainly got ALL those covered. Much love.
